I am about to move to another home where BT have installed out of date infastructure to a brand new village of 5,000 houses B******ds. So no broadband

What I would like to know is how to build a "server" at home where I can try my sites out on and get them working OK before I upload them.

I was thinking of getting an older PC and using it just for this over a home network

Dose anyone have any ideas or can point me in the right direction?

Apache, PHP and MySQL at local machine is the best solution IMO to test your scripts localy before uploading them ..

http://www.apache.org
http://www.php.net
http://www.mysql.com

that's what I am using right now ;)

I intened on having Apache, php, Mysql as well as the normal html.

I am on an XP machine and thought ( I know thinking is not always the best thing to do ) it would be better with Linux operating system rather than windows.

I have tried a couple of ways of getting Apache, php & Mysql on this machine without success. The best install was "IBServer" but I have no idea how to get it working - still on my machine. Apache and Mysql are started but as soon as I select a php page all it dose is open it in my editing program rather than running.

As far as I know, make sure your IP address doesn't change, then get apache and the other stuff you want, install them, then basicly...umm i guess your done.
