I use both phpBB & invision Board, but I like invision board very much bcos it have so many cool features for Admin .. But the issue is I use phpnuke and IB is not integrated with it .. So I am stuck with phpBB ..

What you guys think about phpBB & IB future and to which one I need to stick so that I can avoid hassles with swithching back & forth ..

they're both good. looking at what phpBB has in store for their version 2.2, I think that's great. Invision are doing well as well. phpBB has been ported to a lot of portal systems though, and I don't think Invision has been ported a lot yet (though I can remember seeing a site recently that used Invision as a module within such a portal script).

anyway, they're both great scripts. it just depends on what you want/need

I never liked PhpBB, was too hard for me to install

phpbb too hard to install? its the easiest forum around to install...

I'd go for IPB. But then again, it hasnt been ported to many portal systems, so stick with phpbb, which is still good :)

I like both of them. But IPB is still the best I think. I run both on my site. IPB is more complicated in ways.

I am going to have to check out what is going on over at phpbb.

phpbb is open source, IPB is not, thats why phpBB has been ported more. I like phpBB's look better but IPB has more features.

Invision is by far the best. Passing vB miles away. They just came out with the long awaited realese of Invision Board 1.2. Get it! It is the best.

of course, vB wasn't even mentioned in the original post, it was a question about if phpBB or IPB were better ;)

But still it i great that you can get a free script better than a $170 payed script.

yes, but invision isn't the only free script that is better than vB. actually, must say that most of the popular forum script available these days are better than, or at least of similar quality to vB ;)

I truely don't understand why people keep paying that much money for forum software! :D

I would think vB is one of the better and more stable boards. Only thing keeping most people from using is the $160 price tag. If they droped the price to around $99 I would be glad to pay for it.

really? so what does vB have that warrants the expense? while there is software outthere as good as phpBB and IPB?

vB is alot more stable under heavy traffic and use it seems.

Stefan

it is?

I truely don't see that. the forum over at www.phpbb.com runs pretty stable to me, and that's quite a big forum. and there are even bigger phpBB forums.

I'm no expert but I take it the IPB forums run pretty stable as well.

If they're so much better than vB. Why isn't Hotscripts, SitePoint.com, Webhostingtalk.com running IPB or phpBB?

good question and I have no idea. truely no idea.

and I don't think they're better than vB, but easily comparable.

I guess a lot of websites with a budget pay for vB for the support they then get. phpBB support is completely free, but also on a voluntary basis. IPB is now making a move toward paid support I think.

You might be interested in this topic: http://forums.invisionpower.com/index.php?showtopic=73039

This topic contains a few links to busy and active IPBs. IPB has been proven to handle well over 1 million posts and over 1,000 people in the active users list (over 15mins).

You might also be interested to know that both the 49'ers and the Eagles (NFL teams) use IPB as their official board.

I would think sports teams would be too cheap to buy vB because the users wouldn't use it enough.

Actually, in terms of total payments for registration and copyright removal, they could have bought 2 vB's each quite easily. :)

The Eagle's board has in excess of 600,000 posts and a football fan forum, a recent convert from UBB, has in excess of 500 users online nearly 24/7, their maximum was over 1,000.

as I mentioned earlier, I think both phpBB and IPB can easily handle the same amount of traffic as vB. The only reason why people would want to go for vB as far as I can see it is the paid support. and IPB was doing something like that as well? something like official support means registering for some money? Matt should be able to fill us in on that I'd take it?

IPB can be downloaded and used for free under our unlimited and unrestricted free trial.

You have the option of registering your board for $59.95 a year (lifetime registration offer coming soon). This registration enables you to receive access to our customer ticket centre, our priority support forums (hidden under you're moved up to customer status), live chat, IRC support and phone support in the US and the UK.

It also entitles you to further discounts from our other range of products and plug in components to IPB.

I tend to like IPB a lot more.

Not only is the software great, but the community support is quite good as well. The turn-around time for getting a response is incredible.

Also, the code for IPB is so much easier on my eyes.

Those are just a few other reasons for IPB.

yeah. even though I am biased in the phpBB direction normally, I agree with you on the readability of the code of IPB...

IPB seems to be a bit more linear, less modular, which makes it easier to figure out how it works :)

I use phpbb, but its buggy...and i find invision hard to install due to all the chmod stuff. None of my 6 FTP Clients wont chmod them...
