View Full Version : Two new Features!

As some of you might have already noticed, we just added two new features to the board.

One of which is the ability mark a thread as solved. This features allows the OP to make it know to other uses that he has solved his problem. This will hopefully prove useful in weeding through threads that are and aren't in need of help. To make use of this feature, simply click on the 'Thread Tools' drop down menu and then click 'Mark this thread as solved'.

The second new feature is a 'Thank You' system. You can use this feature to thank the user or users who have helped you with your problem/question/etc. This is a nice alternative to vB's reputation system as it isn't as prone to abuse. To use this, all you have to do is select the http://www.programmingtalk.com/2JavaDeelite/buttons/post_thanks.gif button under the appropriate postbit.

Enjoy! :)

The solved option is a great idea, although not easy to find if you dont know where it is, and in essence, so is the Thanks button. All you have to do now is hope that people notice them and use them instead of leaving thanks posts anyway :D. Perhaps you should have mentioned that the solved option is in the thread tools of any thread you have started

This is the first time Ive been on here since I registered ... back in 2003. Im pleased I picked now to read the announcements as I didnt realise that the [Solved] option was available. Its fantastic! As for the "thanks" Ive already given one away ;)

Can I take this oppertunity to perhaps provide an idea about the thanks option. Although its all good having a thanks for when someone solves your problem it would be nice to perhaps have another button which has a "Thanks Anyway" because its sometimes that someone has responded to your post but was unable to solve the problem. Im not sure if thanks is more suited to those who solve your problem rather than just thanks to everything.

...Ok Ive been working too hard and that probably sounded a little pidantic but Im keeping it on my message in hope others see my point of view...probably just end up getting myself a reputation instead though... :s

Why not just give everyone that tried to help a "thanks"? (For the effort, if you think he deserved it). Sounds easier than adding multiple buttons. :)

Alright, alright - so I aimed for efficiency and ended up with a reputation instead :D

Ill use the "Thanks" button as a "Thanks Anyway" ;)

I noticed the thanks image. I think the image would look better in red though ;o)

I noticed the thanks image. I think the image would look better in red though ;o)Yeah, it would. Prob is that this is a skin for vBulletin made by cinvin, and it might not have included a thanks button with it (im guessin it hasnt or they might have used it :P). There should be psd files included though that can be used to make the buttons

Well, if we're going that route we also need: Didn't Work; Dumb Idea; Read post tried that; and my favorite You're showing the world your ignorance, again.

I don't know about red, but I think it would be nice if it was gradient gray like the "Quote" button.

Yeah
I've noticed that people have taken to the Solved and the Thanks pretty well, on the most part, but has anyone noticed that people still post a thanks at the bottom of their threads as well still :P Hopefully as time progresses more people will simply use the thanks button. The solved seems to have taken off well though. Nice job guys (and ladies if any of you have multiple personalities )

I don't think it was meant to replace thank you posts. Posting a final thank you is just good manners.

Why don't you put the solved option as a button next to the add reply button? (Only the Topic starter will be able to view it).

It would make much more sense if there was just one button at the bottom of each thread for thread owners, next to the Add reply button

EDIT: I've just re-read what you put lol and it's what I've re-iterated for no reason. Need to wake up a bit more oops

HaHa. I'm giving you thanks for that post TheKiser!
If they had one, I would of course click the 'You're showing the world your ignorance' button.

I did think this too but maybe red in the same style of the original grey buttons would be better for drawing attention to this new feature for a while.

Well, two weeks on (almost) and people seem to be using the Thanks button pretty well. The same can't be said for the [SOLVED] part
Perhaps it would be a good idea to have a sticky in each forum with 'New features' as the title explaining what and where the new features are
Jus' an idea

Jay,

Yeah I think that's a good idea.
I think users of the forum have a tendancy to just jump on straight to the php, or script requests forums for example. I think this thread is probably the first one i've read from the 'General Community' section to be honest.

I guess you need a rep system with little rep balls if you've ever seen those.

The reputation system has been disabled on purpose, because it's pointless and only gets abused. I think the "Thank you" function is a nice alternative, though.

I love these features, they really improve the forum.
And you get something back when you help people, haha.
