Hello,
Huge Issue ..will do it in steps
Have my own Domain the hosting is Gone, so left with the Domain Name only
Now I want to use my OWN DOMAIN NAME on my website which i am hosting on my own computer (Running Windows 2003 Server)
i have been using dyndns.us free service to point my domain to my COmputer but what it does is it never points the roote (i.e drhack.net) it only creates and points the sub domain (www.drhack.net etc)
Now how can i create NS on my own machine through the DNS service of MS ...the IP is static (changes in 1 or 2 months ,sometimes)
what all i need to do , I am kinda Confused not knowing from where to start and what to create
with whichnames will i create the Forward lookup Zones in the DNs of MS and which Name Server will i enter in the control panel of my domain name ..
Need some guidance links or anyplace to start lookin from
Thats all
Not cleared bout anything do ask me out
Thanks

Who is your domain registered through?
Normally, I keep the DNS for my domains listed to point at my registrar and from there, manage my host entries. You can set an A record that points at your IP at home that you'll have to update if your IP changes. But it might be easier than trying to manage your own DNS at home.

well my domain register is not having the manga DNS option though i have bought it will be active in few days "maybe" ... but isnt there any other free dns service around
or setting up DNS on my own machine ?.. well the ip doesnt change but it might change and add that "automation" setting up DNS gets vital..
any more ideas ? ...
Thanks for post

I use Godaddy myself to register all my domain names..
Then, for my server at home, I use
http://www.easydns.org
I personally chose easyDNS, over say zoneedit, because at easyDNS, its much easier to setup. zoneedit can be rather confusing, and they don't give you much help there.
There are other places too, like dnsmadeeasy, no-ip, and other such places, but I found easyDNS to be the cheapest, more or less..
either host you choose though, either zoneedit or easyDNS or someone else,
the objective is to use them as a Nameserver provider so to speak. A home server cannot run BIND, because according to domain name NIC rules, each domain name must have at least 2 nameservers, in different parts of the country, meaning 2 separate servers in 2 different geographical locations.. so you can't just run BIND on your home server and expect it to work.. I mean, you could run a single nameserver from there, but not 2, so that won't work..
anyway, all you have to do is
once you get a domain name, goto either zoneedit.com or easyDNS.org whoever you choose, sign up for an account, and then setup your A, CNAME, records in your account there instead of using BIND. easyDNS for instance has a dynamic DNS option which allows you to install a client on your computer to change your IP address for you when your IP changes, for those who don't have static IP addresses (like me for instance on a cable connection)..
then, once you setup how you want your A, CNAME, records, and put in your home server's IP address, then you should be all set to go. You just put in the nameservers zoneedit or easyDNS tells you to put in, use those, and you'll be all set. :)
I've been running a home server for many years now. I dual boot between WIndows Server 2003, and centOS 4.4 at the moment. Sometimes I use Fedora, other times I use centOS, depending upon which flavor I like best at any given time.
I use the server for many things... One of which, is I use it to test out PHP/mysql programs before uploading them to the server.. I do alot of wordpress plugin and design development, as well as discussion board modding and template designing, so I use my test server at home to test those things out before bothering to upload them to the server. I also use it to access my LAN while I'm away from home, to grab a file of some sort that I might need while I'm away. I also use it for moblogging so when I take a snapshot with my camera, its sent to my server at home, which then forwards the picture to my wordpress blog as a post, works out rather well.. so a home server can have many different usages besides just running a website from home. I just use it as a test server mostly, but its so much easier to test stuff if the server is associated by a domain name rather then an IP, because I don't exactally have my IP memorized when I'm away from home. hehe :)
