I have reloaded IIS several times and still have a (stopped) notice on the Default Web Site and the SMTP server. The first two times I loaded with my firewall up. "Zone Alarm" The last time I shut down the firewall and loaded IIS and still have a stopped notice. I am new to ASP and I am using one of my tutorials to bring my self up to speed. Can anyone advise on what I might do to get my server running?
Windows 2000 all patches applied
insight appreciated
Thank You

do you recieve any error messages when trying to start them?
have you tried telnetting into those ports while they are stopped?

The only message I get is the server didn't respond in a timely fashion.
As far as telneting, I shouldn't have to as I am working on my own machine at home. If telneting is an option, how would I go about doing this?

thats an interesting error then... can you try starting it and then open up the event log viewer and check the app log and system logs events for the time like 1 minute before starting and then continue 1 minute past. it should show some detail there

I am not sure about the first one, but open up iis manager, right click on the website and goto the security tab, the annonymous access section, verify that it has the iusr_<compname> as the username and has the check for iis to control the password.
the next two say you have two computers with the same name, if that is true you should be recieving error messages else where. is it possible that you have two with the same name? you may want to try changing this one's name to include srv or somthing and then see if the services start correctly, jsut as a trouble shooting step

I tried your suggestion but nothing came of it. I tried using several different methods as their were quite a few usr_names listed. When I tried to start the server the same error came up; The authentication service is unknown. As far as having two computers with the same name the only thing I can think of is that maybe when my computer starts up it is seeing my roommates computer. We share an internet connection, but we both having sharing set to no. So their shouldn't be any trouble their.

Thanx for the assistance

Heed what the error messages are saying about a duplicate name on the network. When windows determines that there is already a computer by the same name on the network, it disables the protocol it was loading when it detected this. This is occurring at the protocol level and has nothing to do with file/printer sharing.
Either determine for a fact that the two computers do not have the same name or simply change the name of your computer. It has been a really long time since I used Win2k so I cannot advise you where to find this setting, but try right-clicking on "my computer", select properties, and see if there is a computer name tab.
