Which do you think is the best programming language around?

Let the battle commence...

Well. I guess it depends on the task. I know that certain languages are better for different tasks.

For websites, and such I think php is the best. ;)

Disclaimer: The above post is my opinion and should be seen as such. :D

Yeah I think you are right. As we progress in to the future though I think PHP will get stronger and stronger.

Well, for web development i definatily recommend PHP, its fast, its compatible with a lot of OS's, and contains everything you need.

If you are talking server side... i would probably say C/C++ (for Unix and Windows systems).

Php is definately the best for web development - open source, fast, free and full of useful functions. ASP.NET looks quite good, but won't beat PHP 5 when that comes out.

PHP is better, its ezr to learn than perl and uses less resource than perl XML is good but it is only a HTML like program and i dont have ASP on my server so i dont know about them but i heard bad things about ASP. but PHP is fast and you can do amost everything with it.

I disagree with this poll. You cannot compare languages such as PHP and ASP.NET. A better comparison for .NET would be Visual Basic.NET and C# .NET becuase they are actual language and ASP.NET is a platform, not a languages. They aren't even on the same scale as each other. Languages such as PHP, Perl, and Javascript are all scripting languages. Platforms such as ASP.NET are far more powerful than PHP will ever be.

XML isn't even comparable to any of these as XML is a data structure language as opposed to being an instruction language. If you were going to compare any of these languages together it would have to be PHP and Perl, JavaScript, and maybe in a round-about way, ASP.

I don't know any ASP, but I wonder in what way it might be superior to PHP (Surely there must be at least one thingy...)

well i think its like PHP in some fields but PHP is more flexable

well i have tried a bit of fusion, perl, php and javascript i like them all but php is much easier for the end user to understand and there is normaly less editing needed, java script is my choice for client side becouse it's simple and there is not much else that can stand up to it.

ive been doing some c++ also only in a dos enviroment and it's also quite nice, delphi, Java Servlet, Java should also be included among others in the poll.

It amuses me how so many people think PHP is faster than Perl. Perl is MUCH faster than PHP. It's the CGI interface that Perl runs through that slows it down. Remember CGI is not a language, it is an out-dated interface.

Here are performance tests to prove it:
http://www.bagley.org/~doug/shootout/

Everyone keeps looking toward the future... PHP 5 will be much better than ASP.NET! Yada yada yada... Is PHP 5 out yet? No. If that arguement is exceptable, Perl 6 will beat all.

Perl 6 Development: http://dev.perl.org/perl6/
Perl 6 Virtual Machine: http://www.parrotcode.org/

By the way, I voted for Perl.

well PERL does use more bandwidth i used perl b4 and i use to have bandwidth problem until i used PHP but PHP is faster their books and ppl who program can tell you this. Perl is harder to code than PHP. I tryed to program in PERL and quit cause it was hard, i tryed PHP and im almost done with a search engine that is very complex. PHP is also more flexable around coding and database.also php shows you whats wrong on the spot where perl you have to go into your log (if your provider even gives you permission to do so)even then its harder.sorry but im a PHP fan 100%
