I'm looking for a free CMS script to be able to update a simple site (3 or 4 different sections with various pages under those sections) .I don't want a full blown portal with user registration etc though ( I already use postnuke for that)..
Any ideas/suggestions?
Cheers, Joey
Mambo
It's simple, sleek and looks very professional. Check my new Mambo community. It's still underconstruction but everything is almost there.

I've been quite happy with PMachine. Its more of a blog script, but can easily work for a simple CMS. It has optional user registration for comments on articles, but you don't have to implement that.
Things I like about it:
1. Clean, XHTML-compliant output. One of the major reasons why I bailed on PostNuke was the fact that PostNuke generates excremental HTML output. PMachine on the other hand cranks out very clean HTML output that easily validates.
2. PMachine is a breeze to integrate into your own page design. It is very modular, so you simply place the appropriate includes where you want the output to go.
3. Supports user-defined categories. For further categorization, the paid version allows you to have multiple blogs, giving you yet another level of categorization for your site’s content.
4. Nice management interface, very easy to use.
PMachine also has a very active user community and dedicated developers, good documentation too... Well worth the download to check it out

mambo MAY be a little overkill for your requirements, I would heartly recommend the excellent GBWeb (http://www.hotscripts.com/Detailed/15701.html)

Mambo is actually very simple and easy to use and whatever features you don't need you can turn off. The community I linked above uses a lot of mambos features so don't let that make you think it's complicated. It's really not.
I've had some trouble when I tested Mambo with it not being programmed for register_globals=off ... which was a pain in the ***. I've not gotten it to work with register_globals=off. It's a shame, cause it looked promising.
I don't know if they fixed this, but I feel any good CMS is developed on a server with register_globals=off to ensure it's compatible with both on and off.

I agree 100% Mambo rocks and it isn't complicated but it certainly can be a little daunting for new users...
Just my 2c :-)

Agree, but as a webmaster it is very simple... and if you want more, it's difficult to build in in. So, I've made my own one in combination with Rose.

Where can I find 'Rose'?

Nowhere, The site has transformed from PHP to Asp (bad idea ;))

i found dixit (www.dixit.net) pretty good, although the wysiwyg-editor really needs to go, or be replaced by a propper one.

Mambo is a great one.
I agree... it's user friendly and thus not so complicated in setting the script up.
I sort of liked xoops, but it can seem to go on and on forever adding stuff, removing etc.. I'm still looking for something with a forum that i can absolutly block out unwanted turds who seem to love nothing better than ruining others work with thier snide comments and intimidating members or just plain chasing them off being so obnoxious..
xoops.org if youre interested..
I must say, I did another installation of mambo to check it out again, and mambo truely is a very good system. works very nice. easy admin interface as well. very nice.

Have you looked at Guppy (which was MiniPortail) www.freeguppy.org
It is very easy to setup and run, it doesnt even need a databse, although one is planned as an option for future versions.
Great CMS!

Checking so many reviews, I tried Mambo and it indeed is very nice! The template also seems very easy to customize. Looks like all one has to do is just make our own layout, copy the html code, paste it and do minor modifications.
Here is my (basic) site using the Mambo: www.srikat.tk
CMSimple is a simple content management system for smart maintainance of small commercial or private sites. Simple installation and easy to modify. The entire site is stored in a single HTML-file - there is no need of databases. CMS is less than 50 KB. Integrated WYSIWYG online editor (both IE and Mozilla), link validation, image handeling, online editing of system files and automatic backup on logout.
Please see http://www.cmsimple.dk
I'm looking for a free CMS script to be able to update a simple site ..
Try http://www.dixit.net and find a nice and small(?) CMS (PHP/MySql)
-- small
-- layout is limited by your imagination
-- menustructure is simple
-- admin with WYSIWYG (IE 5+)
-- look at http://rikb.quickhost.nl/tlupt/ for my implementation
1st Prize: MAMBO(FREE) (ease of management, ease of setting others up to edit and manage online content)
2nd Prize DELUXE PORTAL: (I think about $65) much of teh same functionality as Mambo but with built in discusion board (the advantage of 1 user logon without having to install multiple modules)
3rd Pride, UltaApps (FREE)(Much of the functionality of MAMBO, with an events calendar and a built in Classified Ads Module, the layout isn't to my liking but its simple, clean, free and it works

Can't tell enough about it from the developers web page to decide if I even want to try it.

Simple to use and manage...

I've used mambo in the past and I found it to be easy to install and maintain, Elegant in its appearance, easy to manage articles with one or several "editors" dispersed off site. For a simple CMS I can't think of one I would rate higher. When evovling past a simple CMS however, If you want to put a CMS with an integrated forum online, try Deluxe Portal and e107 I've used both and although I don't remember a whole lot about either I generally don't use anything that isn't simple, easy to install/maintain, has somewhere between a good and an elegant appearance and is reliable. e107 is free Deluxe Portal was about $69 but it was well worth it. http://www.e107.org/news.php for e107 and http://www.deluxeportal.com/ for DP
Heard good thing about mambo too. Super simple is also: http://www.signumsoft.com/htmlnavigator No database and no php is needed. Unlike many other CMS this one does not store the data in a database, but you directly link to pieces of html. It kind a like puts navigation around it. For easy handling it also offers linking to Microsoft Word documents as well. (More useful for home users)

My fav cms is www.vezine.com. Nothing beats its graceful template handling which you can easily port any kind of templates (from templatemonster.com etc) to the system. Not the mention its numerous features and easy to use interface.
I've been using SiteEnable (http://www.hotscripts.com/Detailed/42032.html). Very cool content management features and what I like most is the ability to add custom fields to any section. It also comes with 20+ skins, or the template HTML can be edited from the admin tools.

Good and "simple": Mambo (http://www.mamboserver.com/)
Complicated, but powerful: Typo3 (http://typo3.com/)
Best of all (Open Source, but not for free): Imperia (http://imperia.de/en/htmls/index.html)
- template engine is very powerful
- workflow engine is the best I have ever seen
Negativ: Very expensive.

Claus
