I think you did a fair job with the sorting formula it was certainly an improvement.

It does, however, carry disadvantages, those being (in no particular order)

(1) Points are not awarded for updates
(2) Some if not most scripts dont have a download link
(3) The old method used was poor and bringing this one in has not had much change due to the fact the stats were not reset.

I also think that the most "important stat" is the votes - not the recommend to friend.

If you leave it how it is it will take 3-6 months before the correct pattern emerges which is fair enough but please take into account points (1) and (2) above!
