I recall the last time hotscripts.com had a forum up I had noted that PHP was catching up with Perl in terms of languages used for scripting.

I believe back then Perl had the lead with something like a 3:1 ratio. Now, PHP has the lead with a about a 3:2 ratio!

I just hope that PHP and hotscripts.com don't get too big and forget about their humble beginnings!

PHP is a growing more popular because of its ez of use, perl is a pain in the *** basically you have to have a 100 different modules to do stupid little things.

Right again ! Php really kicks ***. Besides i think that PHP has the best user communities on the internet. I have a friend of mine who's an asp coder and when he tried to get help all he gets is :

Go to this site www.url.com and purchase WhateverModule. Doesn't cost much, only $70. With it you can send html e-mails.

Right....with php, couple of lines and you're set :)

Yeah, PHP is becoming the worlds largest web development programming language.. This is because of a few things i think:

a) In Perl, you have to echo all the headers.. well. set them up. In PHP this is automatically done for you.

b) In perl..once again.. if you want to use arguments and form variables you have to use your own parsing function to get them.. PHP you can just use the GET or POST variables.

c) PHP's engine has been enhanced by several people to add speed and stability. The production done via CVS allows people to make there own modifications easily and quickly and allows more people to have there input..

Must my $0.02 again.. i have lots of 2 cent coins :D

I think that while php is the most popular language to program in presently, it's by-no-means the most "powerful".

Sad to say, PHP has a lot of growning up to do still. However, I'm die-hard PHP... so don't get me wrong.. I'm totally devoted to PHP.

But, if you really compare it to other languages, php is limited. While I cannot write a single decent line of .jsp, .asp and others, from my observation, they do seem to have a larger base-code, and thus a more powerful heart-beat.

How often do you go, "Dang, I know how to do it in _xyz_ but why doesn't php do that?" Happen quite often for me. Granted, if I could program C, I could also code it, recompile, etc. ;)

lets just agree there are many people who like php and many people who like asp.

i hate going to forums and seeing long, boring and really quite sad people arguing over PHP vs ASP and AMD vs Intel

ASP is easier to sell to a business... Offer them PHP and they will want ASP... Grrr! I hope they like paying extra for windows hosting! And extra for development! ;)

I think the best thing about php is hat most of the time you can install whatever script without a readme file... LOL ... just find the config file, change variables and upload. :D

Why is that any different from ASP?

my scripts do that .. or are most ASP programmers lazy? lol

what does asp do that php doesn't ? You can ask what php does that asp doesn't without modules or whatever they're called !

ASP is pretty much Basic for the web. I do notice a lot of business use ASP i dont know why maybe its just that ASP has microsoft on its name but PHP is definitly easyier to use.

lol what did i just say

PHP is NOT easier to use. your saying it as a statement and not as a personal preferance. whereas i would say i prefer ASP over PHP. im silly that way :P

i must say tho

I have used php and i find ASP so much easier and flexible than php. thats why I like it. I hate when i get people who say they love php and would shit on ASP anyday when they havnt even tried it!!!! getcha act into gear guys!

Its mostly personal preferance, youl get the anti microsoft geeks who just hate ASP for the sake of it, and those who just dont know jack shit. Im gonna be open minded since this is the start of HS forums :D i gave it the first abbreviation :D I wont knock PHP even tho i dont like it. I would like for everyone else to be likewise. Dont pish on my lovely language!!!! arghhhh

Dont knock it untill youve tried it :p :p

and Duey!!! what makes it basic m8?

I still hold my thoughts that the reason ASP is so popular is because its Microsoft's, can run on windows platforms, and gets its name from there.. If AvidMotion owned it, it would be going no where fast! :p

I think that Duey was saying, is that its like Visual Basic, except for the web. Which is true, a lot of the structures and formatting are exactly the same. You can even design ASP applications in Visual Basic.

Oh, and i have tried it :p

PHP is far easyier to use, what makes it basic? let me see well all the commands are the same the syntax is the same o AND its made by microsoft who made basic?

PHP is easyier to use because you arn't stuffing around with modules, If asp is the best wouldnt you think they would have more scripts available for it?

Also PHP is better because its opensource ASP isnt ASP is controlled by microsoft so you cant edit/change the code to suit you, and you cant beat PHP's code base

O one more thing PHP is faster.

Lets not start flaming people here :p

Just FYI, PHP does have modules avaliable, its just that most distributions of php come with them included... some dont (depending on which operating system you're talking about).

I wouldn't say PHP is easier to use, they are basically about the same complexity level, heck there are even ASP2PHP converters avaliable..thats how similar they are.

I must agree with Duey here about the open source part though, it makes php more customisable for yourself.

I would not make the assumption that PHP is faster either, there are many tests you could do which would return varying results. A good writen script versus a poor one? Different server environments... You can't really judge which language is faster overall (except we all know perl is the slowest :p j/k)

Chris :)

The PHP faster bit was from orelly and the closed one to PHP was C

some of thats true yeah but i still gotta say thanks to microsoft for putting more money in my bank with ASP than PHP ever could
